You Can Call Me Martha

Okay not quite Martha Stewart. I still haven’t mastered homemade napkin holders or the perfect Halloween-themed cupcake, but I did start my very first container garden!

Having never done this before, this is 100% an experiment in the following:

1.) Which items grow best in a container garden?

2.) My ability to keep something alive

3.) Whether the $85 I dropped on this will be worth it

That last one will be hard to measure while the first two will be fairly easy (dead or not dead).

My container garden is small and humble…I would have loved to gone CRAZY and grown a bunch of different things but I’m fairly picky when it comes to vegetables and well, have I mentioned that this is my first time doing this?? I’m 13% positive that I’ll fail miserably. However, despite this fact I invested in the following:

1.) 3 strawberry plants (2 of them are already blooming!)

2.) 2 sweet basil plants

3.) 3 different varieties of pepper: poblano, jalapeno and spicy banana

4.) 2 large-variety tomato plants: Early Girls (should see fruit on these in the next 40 days)

5.) 2 smaller-variety cherry tomato plants: Porter’s Dark Cherry and Sweet 100s

In the next couple weeks I fully plan to go get some different flowers, at which point I’ll have the happiest little deck around! So excited to start eating my home-grown fruits and veggies!

You Know You’ve Lost Weight When…

…even the most stretchy workout pants don’t fit anymore!

That’s right ladies and gents – I was forced to “treat” myself (I know, rough life, eh?) to a whole new workout wardrobe today because my workout pants are officially falling off of me (eeek! No one wants to see that…). I was at soccer practice with my little sister on Monday and, as with most practices, I was running sprints with the team and having to HOLD MY PANTS UP as I ran. The same thing happens when I scrimmage with the girls or even work it out really hard on the elliptical.

Now, workout garb is EXPENSIVE so I’ve been putting this off for as long as I could. After Monday though, I figured that now is the time. I spent about $60 on 3 pairs of workout pants that should last me the next few months, at least, depending of course on how my weight loss continues to go.

For you thrifty shoppers, yes I probably could have gotten them cheaper (for less money) but they would have also BEEN cheaper (lesser quality). These are pants that I wear 5-6 days a week to workout in, and sometimes just for the heck of it simply because they’re comfy. I want them to last me a while so I decided to splurge. Plus, they made my tush look pretty sweet – how could I argue with THAT?! lol

I’ve also had my eye on this adorable pea-coat at Old Navy for the past couple weeks:

Old Navy Coat

…and it was on sale for $80 (it might be $90 now) but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it – just yet. I tried it on and I really liked the way it looked but can I really justify purchasing this $90 coat when it might not (fingers crossed) even fit me next winter? On one hand, it would be really nice to “reward” myself with some birthday money from grandma for all my hard work this summer. The nice wool coat I bought and wore last winter still fits but it’s a little bit big and may look frumpy. On the other hand, wouldn’t it be worth it though, to just make that one LAST for this winter and then really be able to buy a **SUPER CUTE** coat NEXT winter since I’ll be at my goal weight? That’s what I’m thinking…but THIS one is HERE, NOW. I need to chill out with this “instant gratification” mindset.

In other COAT news (not that many of you care but I’m super excited about it), the REALLY nice winter jacket that I bought myself 4 years ago FITS AGAIN! Yay! It’s one of those ski jackets that has the outer shell and then the inner down-filled liner that zips in. I love this thing…it’s tan and pink (PINK!) and I haven’t been able to wear it for the past 2 (maybe even 3) winters because well, it didn’t fit. I tried it on this past weekend and VOILA! it fits beautifully. I am ecstatic. Maybe I can just *pretend* that it’s new and hopefully that will take my mind off the Old Navy coat?

Weigh in is tomorrow – I’m switchin’ to Fridays – and I’m really hoping that I see a loss on the scale. MY scale is saying that I’ve lost about a pound and a half and I still have one more trip to the gym tonight (second of the day). Dinner will be a small baked potato with a boca burger, green beans and lots of water. Ooooh! and my new favorite snack? Wheat Thins Fiber Selects – Garden Vegetable:

Wheat Thins–> 120 cals, 4g of fat and 5g of fiber – these are only 2 points per serving. The best part? One serving is 15 crackers! They’re delicious and filling so it’s a great little snack in the middle of the day and BONUS! it doesn’t taste like cardboard as many fiber-filled foods often do. They’d be scrumptious with hummus (yum). Enjoy…you can thank me later :)

I was boycotting…

…my own blog. Yes I know, it’s a bit ridiculous. I would have picketed too (is that what that’s called? Picketing? Clever signs…and shouting and stuff?) but I didn’t feel the need to show my “true crazy.” Yet. I was really utterly annoyed with the apostrophe catastrophe – see previous posts – that was happening so I was silently protesting my very own blog – apathy is SUCH a bitch. However, my good friend Josh Todd (also, Internet Ninja) fixed it for me a couple weeks go so we’re good to go!

Not much has changed since the last time I wrote. Well one big thing I guess: I moved home. It’s not something I’m proud of but I am *very* fortunate to have such a supportive family. It’s a pretty sweet gig, really: no rent, free food, no utility bills. I am actively job searching – that’s an entirely different rant so we won’t go there today. Basically I’m looking forward to being out on my own again…but not just yet.

Update on the weight-loss since it’s been a while for that too: Officially 25.8 pounds lost (a little more than 30 total including what I did on my own). I feel that I’m at a bit of a stand-still right now…stuck at a certain weight so I’m trying to kick up my workouts. I was doing really well with swimming for a while so I’m going to try to get back into doing laps. Since I have nothing but time now, I will probably try to go back to doing two-a-days. We’ll see how that pans out. I still have a long way to go in my weight loss but it’s a process so I’m trying to stay positive. Of course it helps to have a great support/buddy system in my friends Morgan and JJ. I’m also trying to find inspiration in different thngs. Mainly, I’m looking forward to when Biggest Loser starts again because that motivates me like nothing else. If you haven’t seen it, it starts again in September – and whether you are trying to lose weight or not, it’s an AMAZING showcase of where determination, motivation and persistence will get you. If you want something bad enough, you can achieve anything. Here are a few of my faves from last season (I CAN’T WAIT!):

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately with my family – which, believe it or not, I quite enjoy. Friday night, in fact, my mom suggested going on a picnic up at Horsetooth Reservoir so I took some pics of our evening. We got some take-out sushi, drove up to the res and have a lovely evening.
